  The area has been the home of countless folklore tales, but none so famous as the folklore Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, "Taketori Monogatari". A 10th century legend about a mysterious girl discovered inside the stalk of a great bamboo plant when she was a baby. She was said to have come from 'Tsuki-no Miyako', "The Capital of the Moon" and had hair that shone like gold.
